As part of the tasks imposed on EU Member States resulting from the provisions of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), a periodic assessment of the state of the marine waters environment is being developed. In 2012, the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection developed an "Initial assessment of the state of the environment of the Polish zone of the Baltic Sea". In accordance with art. 17(1) MSFD, and art. 150 paragraph 15 of the Polish Water Law Act, the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection in 2018 developed the "Update of the initial assessment of the state of the environment of the Polish zone of the Baltic Sea".

In addition, for the needs of national ongoing assessments of the state of the environment, the Chief Inspector of Environmental Protection performs annual assessments of the state of the marine environment. The current assessment is "Assessment of the state of the environment of the Polish marine areas for 2017 against the background of the decade 2007-2016".
