Monitoring
Data for 6-year and one-year assessments are obtained from monitoring studies conducted in Polish maritime areas, which are part of the State Environmental Monitoring. These include biological elements: mammals, birds, fish, phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos, macrobenthic plants, physicochemical parameters, nutrients, hazardous substances, litter and noise. Information is supplemented with data from other sources, such as ichthyofauna from the Multiannual Fisheries Data Collection Program, impulse noise with data from the Ministry of National Defence, and oil spills from Maritime Offices.
According to the provisions of the MSFD, monitoring programs must be updated in a 6-year cycle to verify the progress of achieving good environmental status. The current program was developed in 2020. The scope and methods of conducting monitoring studies consider the guidelines agreed at the regional level in the framework of cooperation coordinated by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (Helsinki Commission – HELCOM).
